"The Pioneer Train" traveled through Elmira NY in 1939 on the Erie RR tracks, stopping at Union Station (also known as the "Queen of the Southern tier"). The train was powered by the "Wm Crooks", built in 1861 and Minnesota's first operating steamer. It is a locomotive of the same type as "The General", the 4-4-0 Western & Atlantic steam engine of the Civil War's "Great locomotive chase" also known as "Andrew's Raid". The train is seen heading east across the newly constructed viaduct (built to eliminate the many train/traffic accidents in Elmira) bound for New York City to be displayed at the World's Fair. The Norfolk Southern uses the same viaduct and route through Elmira today!
