Voting Question: how do i join a new york state police academy?

i've been doing a little research, and do know i need to take and pass a civil service exam. which i have done for the NYDOC. i do have a GED, and i'm 25. i do have a criminal record but none of them were felonies, and i have not been in trouble for at least 4 years.i dont know if that matters or not? i would like to join the Elmira police department. this has been a dream of mine since i was about 8 or 9. and Elmira needs some help with cleaning up the city. and i would like to help. if anyone has any advice or tips that could help me out, please let me know. thanks...
